Field Guide to Boston
5 things to do this weekend, including the Cambridge Jazz Festival and a 'Wizard of Oz' art exhibit
Newport Folk Festival has a reputation for solid lineups — that’s why it sells out every year before the excruciatingly painful, slow release of booked performers. While I wasn’t able to secure tickets ahead of time, by the grace of the music journalism gods, I will be covering the festival for WBUR. I cannot wait to see the angelic creature that is Hozier again and hear my latest obsession, Billie Marten, live. If you weren’t able to snag tickets or aren’t a fan of folk music, check out the other music, visual art and speaker events happening this weekend in Greater Boston.
'A Beautiful Resistance: Live!'
Friday, July 26
The Boston Globe’s Deputy Managing Editor Jeneé Osterheldt will discuss A Beautiful Resistance, a project she created to celebrate Black joy. A Beautiful Resistance releases a weekly short film, long-form story and a Q&A. Osterheldt and her team also encourage community members to post their own version of A Beautiful Resistance on Instagram. Osterheldt writes, “Like Frederick Douglass taught us, there is power in representation. Too often, we are measured by our suffering. Blackness must not be defined by our brutalization. We are more than death. When we are depicted by our extremes, the truth of us is lost. We live, fully. Our joy, our dreams, our everyday stories? That's a beautiful resistance.” At the Museum of Science event, Osterheldt will chat with Mattapan rapper Nay Speaks, creative consultant Herv JeanBaptiste and DJ-and-producer duo SuperSmashBroz (members of our 2022 Makers cohort). There will also be a screening of a never-before-seen episode of “A Beautiful Resistance,” an audience Q&A and an after-party. The event is for ages 18 and older, and guests can attend for free with pre-registration.
'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'
Friday, July 26-Saturday, Sept. 7
We all remember the 1939 feature with Judy Garland, but this exhibit at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod revisits Dorothy and her journey to Oz in a new way. Patrons can view Christina Schlesinger's "The Dorothy Paintings," 13 mural-sized scenes of Dorothy and her friends meeting and following the yellow brick road. Schlesinger depicts Dorothy as “the symbol of youthful resilience and independence.” On Saturday, July 27, Palette, a weekend supper club at the center, will offer cuisine inspired by Oz with jazz performances by pianist Laszlo Gardony. For children, there will be LEGO building, “If I Only Had a Brain-Teasers” and outdoor games like a “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” sprinkler. Tickets are $25.
Lowell Folk Festival
Friday, July 26-Sunday, July 28
Folk lovers who weren’t able to snag tickets to Newport Folk Festival are in luck because downtown Lowell is also hosting a folk music festival this weekend, and it’s free! The festival will bring together musicians, singers and dancers across cultures from Yoni Battat Ensemble, a Mizrahi Jewish music group from Boston, to Farah Yasmeen Shaikh, a Kathak dancer. There will also be a parade, street performances, dancing, artist vendors and global cuisine. Plus, last year’s T-shirt design was adorable, so if you love showing off your concert merch, this might be the place to pick up a new item. [Here are six acts to know, recommended by WBUR contributor Lauren Daley.]
'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back' in concert
Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28
If you’re a fan of “Episode V” of the “Star Wars” film series, hear the Cape Symphony play the music live. Conductor Thiago Tiberio will lead musicians through John Williams’ Grammy-winning score while the film plays for a magical evening of live music and lightsaber battles. If you need a refresher on the plot, this film is where the rebels are forced to flee ice planet Hoth after Imperial Forces attack. Han Solo and Leia make it out on the Millennium Falcon, and Luke journeys to find Yoda. The concert will take place at Barnstable Performing Arts Center, and tickets range from $32 to $75. Tickets are half price for ages 5-12. All orders will be charged a $10 fee.
Cambridge Jazz Festival
Saturday, July 27-Sunday, July 28
Celebrate a weekend of live jazz music at the ninth annual Cambridge Jazz Festival. Some of the performers include South African and Boston-based drummer and composer Lumanyano Mzi, the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice Quartet and Gabrielle Goodman, professor in the voice department at Berklee. José C. Massó III, host and producer of weekly bilingual Latin music program ¡Con Salsa! on WBUR, will host both days of the festival. General admission is free, and gazebo seating is $400 for one day and $700 for the weekend.
